alchemy
Alchemy is a practice that combines philosophy, mysticism, and chemistry with the goal of turning ordinary metals into gold, extending life, and discovering the secrets of immortality.
I don't think alchemists are just looking for gold. They are mostly trying to figure out how to change one substance into another and study how substances change. It's unclear how successful they are at this. What is gold really worth if someone can make an atomic bomb? If I could do that, I could become an alchemist and threaten a nation. I would buy gold for my friend.
The word "alchemy" comes from the Arabic word "alkimya". This word has two meanings. The first is "al kem" or "al shem", which is what the ancient Egyptians called their country. This means "black earth", referring to the fertile soil compared to the arid desert. The Arabs concluded that this science was called "Egyptian art". The second possibility is that "alchemy" comes from the Greek word "cyma", which means "sticking the metal" or "pouring it".
