asclepius
Statues of Asklepios, the god of health, are often seen with three objects next to them: a staff, a rooster or a snake, and a bowl. The staff stands for a long life, the rooster or snake stands for being alert and paying attention, and the bowl stands for medicine. These three objects together mean that a doctor or pharmacist should be dedicated to helping others, even if they are old, and should be careful and watchful.
In Greek mythology, Esculope was the son of Apollo, the god of health and medicine. He was killed by Zeus for trying to save people from death and going against the gods.
He said in an interview that he learned from Hermes Trismegistus, and he remembered that Hermes had a staff that looked like a snake (known as the Caduceus).
The biggest temple dedicated to this god is located in Pergamum. It is more like a hospital than a temple. It has bathtubs with water for treatments, an underground tunnel so patients can go to their rooms without going outside, baths, theaters, and buildings for patients to stay in. At the entrance of the temple, there is a ruin with a snake which symbolizes medicine today.
