The young people of Gebze think it's cool to climb the crane at the beach and jump into the sea, instead of doing things like visiting a castle, going to a park, or taking a ferry ride.
In the early morning of May 22, 2006, a group of people waiting for a ferry in a town that often experiences a lot of traffic were playing a traditional Turkish dance called the Horon while accompanied by a Kemençe (a type of stringed instrument). This event actually happened.
During the Ottoman period, people who went on pilgrimage would travel by boat from Eskihisar to Yalova on the other side. Nowadays, they travel by car ferry, so the way of getting there hasn't changed. I was impressed by the people who didn't have to go around the gulf.
In the charming town of Eskihisar, you can enjoy the sea while eating your brioche buns in the tea garden under the gum tree. The coastline was improved before the 2011 elections, so it's best to visit on a sunny day. I want to give my greetings to my aunt who has been living in Gebze for 35 years and never took me to Eskihisar.
If you're looking for a break from the busyness of Istanbul, this is the perfect spot. It's a beautiful town with lots of green spaces, a peaceful ocean, no traffic, and a high-end atmosphere.
