in fact, fasting is more about discovering the limits of the reality of being a human and the relationship of the self with respect to the creator, allah (cc). by subjecting your nafs to conditions which are outside of the boundaries of daily habit, you get to see and experience a different state of being. you declare to your nafs that it's not the one who is in control. and that, when the order comes from allah, obeying to that order precedes any kind of earthly urges, no matter how trying they might be.
all in all, fasting is an experience that pushes you out of the illusion of your daily life and nudges you a bit closer to sensing the actual reality of your existence.
