philology

Philology is the love of words. It is a science that looks at how languages are structured, how they have changed over time, how words are exchanged, and how they are related in terms of sound, form, and meaning. People who study this are called philologists. They look at written documents to make sure they are accurate and authentic, and try to decode and reconstruct them, as well as detect any imitations and determine their value. It is a great field of study for those who enjoy working with texts.

philology

People who finish college or graduate school are called "philologists". Some people prefer to be called a "linguist". Most of these graduates end up doing jobs that have nothing to do with philology (like design, secretarial work, singing, or selling spare parts). Some of them become teachers, which is a difficult job and they should be respected for it. A few stay at the school as academics, but their work is usually limited to the curriculum. Very few of them come up with new theories.

philology

contrary to popular belief, philology does not mean linguistics. philology is a science that studies ancient texts and languages. culture, religion, society, art, and literature can all fall under the field of philology. the field of study of modern linguistics is much wider. to say philology is linguistics would limit linguistics.

in fact, confusion of philology with linguistics is common not only in our country but also in other countries. some argue that philology is the classic form of linguistics. others say philology only studies language in literary texts.

last note: philology does not equal linguistics.
