In 1591, something was stolen from the Grand Bazaar. The shopkeeper was shocked when he arrived in the morning and saw the theft, as it was the first time something like this had happened in the Bazaar. The thief was quickly found out to be a young man working with an Armenian jeweler. He had hidden what he stole under a mat in his master's shop, which is where the phrase "to hide it" comes from.
