not being able to enjoy life
When I was in my senior year of high school, I went to Amsterdam for my first trip abroad during the summer break. I was so impressed by the city that I even thought about studying at the university there. After I finished college, I realized that I didn't enjoy the job I had in that field, so I decided to pursue graphic design, which I saw as a hobby. I was 25 and had no experience, so I had to start from the bottom and work for a company that paid very little. I worked hard and eventually got a job at a design agency. I had a girlfriend at the time and we would usually hang out in cheap places, but every few months we would treat ourselves to a nice dinner. One time, we even went on a tour of the islands and had dinner at a seafood restaurant with the last of our money. Now, I'm living 20 minutes away from work and I'm a designer at the biggest design agency in the Netherlands. Although I'm doing well, I don't get the same pleasure from Amsterdam as I did 10 years ago, and I can't find a meal that tastes as good as the fish I had on the island.
Not having a life that brings pleasure or joy is like being stuck in a boring game. You feel like you can't leave, even though you've worked hard to get to where you are. You feel like you have nowhere to go and you just sit there for hours. It's normal to not enjoy a life like this and you may want to change it, but it feels like someone has tied you down and you can't escape. You have a job and other things to be thankful for, but you feel sorry for those who are able to enjoy life.
As people get older, they tend to get less and less enjoyment out of the same things. This is true for both poor and rich people. Poor people may get bored of eating the same food every day, while rich people may get bored of driving the same luxury car. This means that no matter how much money someone has, they will eventually reach a point where they don't get as much pleasure out of the same things.
